When I try to create my mount points the first command i type in
following the installation guide is:
mkdir /mnt/gentoo
When i hit enter i get a message saying:
mkdir:cannot create directory '/mnt/gentoo':file exists
Does that mean the the directory is already there? When it gave me the
error i skipped to the next commands and i had no other problems following the guide on creating my mount points except for the first command.

Yes, the latest cd has the directory created already, you can go a head and ignore that message.
