I've been installing lfs (Linux From Scratch) on a spare box to further my knowledge of Linux.
I installed mysql on it yesterday, which runs fine, but when i installed the mysql boot script, the computer hangs when booting.
( rc-update add mysql default) on Gentoo
So i headed over to the lfs-support channel to get some help.
"turn on debugging in the startup script", i was told.
"I don't know how to do that", i said.
"well you shouldn't be using lfs then", i was told.
Now i remember the most fundamental reason why i have stuck with Gentoo for years:
THE COMMUNITY.
I love you guys, for all your patience while answering all the dumb-ass questions i have asked, and for not looking down your
noses at me for knowing less than you do.
Without all your help i would still be clicking my mouse in Suse Linux without any clue as to why things work, or what config file does what.
Once again, thanks for allowing me to learn my favourite hobby: Linux.

The thing that help is the number of ppl that contribute to the community.
Every community has jack-asses and the problem is they tend to be the first to setup shop in a community.
These jackasses will scare ppl of with their "RTFM" comments left right and centre.
as ppl work things out and actually start adding their help back the output from the jackasses gets drowned out by the more reasonable and helpful ppl _________________

It's the best resource I've seen so far when it comes to Linux, when the manpages and Google fail. _________________ [ Kawa-kun, new and improved!! ]

I've only ever asked something like 3 questions on these boards, or anywhere else for that matter.
Anyway, I think the community is good. Developers post once in a while too, and we get a look as to how things work in simpler terms when they do that.
All in all, this is a fairly courteous and reasonably knowledgeable community, at least as far as using the system is concerned. |

I wonder just how important Gentoo is in the open-source community.
Sure, everybody calls gentooers crazy for building from source and hitting all sorts of hitherto unknown bugs. But we fix the damn bugs. We're the largest, widest, and weirdest testing base they ever had. _________________ Petition for Better 64-bit ATI Drivers - Sign Here

The OP said, "You just cant beat the Gentoo community!"
My reply: Sure you can. It just takes a blunt object and a LOT of time. _________________

for me is pretty logical, if you use lfs then you should not ask about how to do something since LFS is made with experts in mind. So the response is logical and expected. For using LFS you need to know how to do everything yourself, since there is really no support for your own build, since lfs is not a distribution. But I agree it isn't the best answer either. By the way, I'm using T2 and OpenSDE (T2 fork) to build my own distro, this is the better way for me, since using LFS requires for you to be a programmer, not an advanced one, but need at leas the basics. I recommend an SDE over LFS anytime. _________________ Gentoo: Gigabyte: nFORCE 2: nVIDIA GeForce 6600: AMD Athlon XP 3200+

ugh, I thought LFS was designed for people to "learn the linux internals". But yeah, I agree, Gentoo's community is by far the best.

True, but I thought of the joke before I read your post, and obviously it's the thought that counts! _________________ Plants are pithy, brooks tend to babble--I'm content to lie between them.
