HI,
I just tried to install gentoo 2006.1 without a network connection but in stage 1 (I downloaded a portage snapshot before), I chose the standard install and then when I was asked (twice) for the portage URL, I put file:///tmp/portage-lastest.tar.bz2, I configured make.conf and chose some additionnal packages, then I launched the installatoin and I got:
GLI: October 14 2006 14:51:24 - Fetching and unpacking tarball: file:///tmp/portage-latest.tar.bz2
GLI: October 14 2006 14:54:02 - file:///tmp/portage-latest.tar.bz2 was fetched and unpacked.
GLI: October 14 2006 14:54:04 - ERROR! : Could not update the config files!
GLI: October 14 2006 14:54:05 - This is a bad thing. An exception occured outside of the normal install errors. The error was: '[Errno 2] No such file or directory: '/mnt/gentoo/etc/make.conf''
GLI: October 14 2006 14:54:05 - Traceback (most recent call last):

self._edit_config(filename, {key: make_conf[key]})
GLI: October 14 2006 14:54:05 - File "/opt/installer/GLIArchitectureTemplate.py", line 207, in _edit_config
f = open(filename,'w')
GLI: October 14 2006 14:54:05 - IOError: [Errno 2] No such file or directory: '/mnt/gentoo/etc/make.conf'
If you need it, I kept the whole log and the installation profile.
Thanks in advance |

I'm not sure how the GLI does a stage1 installation, but a traditional install requires downloading a lot more than just a portage snapshot.
You will need :
A stage1 tarball
A portage snapshot
Approx 200MB of source code to build the base system
... and as far as I know, the installation CD only provides a portage snapshot. All of the other files need to be downloaded during installation (or beforehand if you know which files to get). |

Look on any mirror in the stages directory of the release you're interested in. _________________ Please add [solved] to the initial post's subject line if you feel your problem is resolved. Help answer the unanswered
