i'm reading "linux server security" book and is says that it is better:
. not to have gcc on your bastion hosts
. keep the system up to date
how can i have an up to date Gentoo system without my gcc compiler? i think it isn't possible... so, is there another trick?

You could make binary packages for that machine on another, scp them to it and install.
