I have just upgraded to KDE 3.5.5. I now have a problem printing from applications. I can see my printer from the control pannel, make it print a testpage, see it's status, etc. No problem. But when I invoke the printing dialog in an application, I get a small box "Initializing printing system" with a small printer icon next to it, and then an errorbox with this text in it:
Quote:
An error occurred while retrieving the printer list:

Connection to CUPS server failed. Check that the CUPS server is correctly installed and running. Error: localhost: read failed (15).

I have CUPS running, and I can connect to it from a browser at http://localhost:631 just fine. I have CUPS version 1.1.23-r8.

Does anyone know where to start looking for a fix for this issue?

This worked for me:
In the printing dialog -> System options -> Cups server: change from "localhost" to your actual machine name.

Thanks for the tip! It works!
No idea why "localhost" won't work though. It should be the same as the name of my local machine, right? Anyway, I can print again, which is the main thing. Thanks again.

The way of setting up the hostname and domainname seems to have changed: from Gentoo Linux x86 Quick Install Guide you set the localhost line in /etc/hosts/to
Code:
127.0.0.1 mybox.at.myplace mybox localhost
set your machine name in /etc/conf.d/hostname and then
Code:
# hostname mybox
# hostname -f
mybox.at.myplace

Can you reproduce the problem with kde-base/kdelibs-3.5.5-r1?

I have the same problem but I can not solve it.
When I start a print, everything looks ok but nothing comes out of the printer.
I tested some different drivers and some of them makes the whole panel light up in error.
The scanner works but not he printer.

I'm sure the problem does not occure in the hp-part but in the cups or some her system-config.
I have dual-boot and if I test in windows the printer works.
