This looks like the perfect gentoo application (fits in perfectly with the gentoo way of things imo) but i lack the sufficient programming knowlegde to do such a thing...
maybe a simple bash script at first, moving to python then poss C/++? _________________ 95% of all computer errors occur between chair and keyboard (TM)

Well, the site sure is correct, it's weird that an application like that doesn't exist.
What about python+ncurses, both "system" packages in Gentoo?
(I'm not talking about writing one myself; maybe I know how to, but anyway.) _________________ [Server etc. | C2D 2.2 @ 3.0 GHz / 4 GB RAM / 3x1 TB + 1x2 TB SATA disks + 1.5 TB ext. | Gentoo]

grox had something like that. grox is a place that gives out free shell accounts with restrictions. they had an option during sign up that asked you what kind of shell you wanted. there was also a "newbie" option which was an in-house thing that directed you around and made it easier for non-linux users to be able to do things from the CLI without actually entering in commands.
i never used it or saw it myself, but i hear it's pretty handy. i imagine that if the source could be made available, it could be adapted to start different kinds of X sessions easily. _________________ I used gentoo BEFORE it was cool. |

Applications like that have existed in the past.
I had one on my machine at uni. Sadly, at that point, I was a wuser and too wussy to do it myself (one of my friends did it for me) so I don't know what it was.
The crux is, the reason it doesn't exist is because nobody needs it. It's fucking useless.
If X doesn't work, it throws you back to the CLI. If it does work, you use XDM (or KDM or GDM or whatever) to select your DE. If X hangs, you boot with something that takes you straight to the CLI. _________________ Want Free games?

I was thinking the same thing. But it would be useful if GDM/KDM/XDM could drop to the shell and allow a login from there. _________________ Screenshot |

???
i'm baffled.
Quote: | Imagine booting to a console-mode equivalent of one of the login managers. It would offer choices of, say, GNOME, KDE, XfCE, Midnight Commander, a pure console, plus whatever other desktops or applications the user has decided to include. |
I do imagine that, everytime I log onto my machine, because that's exactly what happens.
Machine boots, terminal prompt to login, I login and then I can run whatever I want, whether it be a pure console, or "whatever other desktops or applications" I choose.
I don't see the point. Either you want pure console, or you want Xfree86, or you can even switch back and forth with CTRL-ALT-FunctionKey. |

My school has a lot of text terminals whose purpose of life is to ssh in to a shell server. The interface that's presented to newbies is flin (Flin's a Learner's Interface to 'Nix systems)...
Here's a "screenshot" that's cut'n'pasted from an xterm... it looks fine on my screen and browser, if it doesn't on yours, I'll take a .png of it. Note that those x's and q's are supposed to be lines.

You could very quickly whip up a shell script to do exactly what the article is talking about using dialog. Dialog is the program that is used on the Slackware install CDs to create those nifty console combo boxes and such, it's a handy little app. |
