For some reason it doesn't send text to the chat rooms. It works for private messages.
It works, however, with the Windows client.
Any idea what is wrong?

no idea what's wrong but I can recommend trying museek(+) which seperates connection to the server from the GUI for searching/browsing/chatting into two parts.
More info can be found here with links to the sourceforge page, project trac, ebuilds (for stable and current svn).
If you really want to get things working in nicotine try pm'ing daelstorm who maintains and enhances the nicotine package and is the main protagonist for museek+ development (as hyriand stopped developing either a while back). I doubt you'll have much luck in sorting pyslsk as it is only updated for changes in the network protocol.
Failing all of that, you could try the slsk linux forum.
