|
|
Like many others, I'm having trouble booting after compiling and my kernel. When booting via lilo, before freezing I get as far as:
Code: |
Loading linux................
BIOS data check successful
Umcompressing Linux... Ok, booting the kernel.
|
...and when booting via floppy (my image was roughly 1.3 meg):
Code: |
Loading................
Umcompressing Linux...
ran out of input data
-- System halted
|
I've already tried the obvious/frequently-repeated suggestions, namely:
- Ensured correct processor named in kernel menuconfig
- Ensured correct processor named in make.conf (both CHOST and CFLAGS) -- (also made the change in make.global, since this supposedly helped one user)
- Disabled advanced power management support
- Ensured BIOS is up-to-date
I can boot from the image found on the cd without trouble, and I can also
boot with 'gentoo root=/dev/hda2' and end up in my system.
I'm using RiemanFS for my boot and root partitions, and my boot partition was indeed mounted using '-o notail' when lilo was installed.
I'd greatly appreciate any suggestions. My next plan will be to attempt to build a bare bones kernel. Problem is, it takes so damn long to compile.
Many thanks,
Cael

You should put GRUB (not your kernel) on a floppy for booting/rescue use.
Copy your kernel to /boot on the harddrive. |

Hey! Start your own thread! :)
My most recent bare-bones kernel still won't boot. At this point I'm at a loss, any suggestions would be really appreciated.
This doesn't make any sense.

Can you post your kernel config ? (/usr/src/linux/.config)
... and a quick description of your hardware. |

Thanks all for your suggestions -- I ditched lilo and moved to grub and had absolutely no problems booting.
Unfortunately, I'm now having trouble with grub on a totally different machine. :)
