Alright, for no apparent reason, esound has stopped, and now I can't get more than one sound to play. So I'm either looking for help on fixing esound or getting alsa to do proper mixing. Tuesday night, everything was working fine, I could play my di.fm streaming techno, watch a movie, hear my chat im sounds, all going at the same time with no problems. Wed. night I come home and I get nothing.

A little digging shows me this:
Code:

clinton@localhost:~$ esd
ALSA lib confmisc.c:1105:(snd_func_refer) Unable to find definition 'defaults.pcm.dmix_format'
ALSA lib conf.c:3479:(_snd_config_evaluate) function snd_func_refer returned error: No such file or directory
ALSA lib conf.c:3936:(snd_config_expand) Args evaluate error: No such file or directory
ALSA lib pcm.c:2143:(snd_pcm_open_noupdate) Unknown PCM dmix:SI7012
clinton@localhost:~$ sudo su
localhost clinton # esd
Segmentation fault

I did an emerge sync a couple of hours ago (esound was already broken) and lo and behold, a new package of esound wanted to come in. So I did the update, and it still didn't work. I re-emerged alsa and then esound again, and still nothing. So, I'm here at your mercy, help me get esound working or some type of sound mixing working, please.

Code:
clinton@localhost:~$ emerge --info

The first question that comes to mind is do you really need esound? The only thing it seems to be "needed" for in my experience is getting the (pointless) event sounds to work in gnome. For everything else dmix (an alsa plugin) is a better alternative, and it doesn't randomly break or require update time. There is a good guide to setting dmix up in the wiki :)

edit: I was bored so went off and found the link in the wiki ;) http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_ALSA_sound_mixer_aka_dmix
