i have recently lost the ability to load my nvidia modules. i haven't recompiled the kernel. all i did was an emerge world and an etc-update, and now, i get the following complaint when i try to start up a display manager: Code: |
Error: This version of the NVIDIA kernel module is too old to support version checking. Please update your kernel module to version 1.0.4349
(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to initialze the NVIDIA kernel module!
| what mystifies me is that the latest ebuild is for 1.0.4349-r2 and that is the one i'm using. shouldn't this be sufficient? Code: |
* media-video/nvidia-glx
Latest version available: 1.0.4349
Latest version installed: 1.0.4349
Size of downloaded files: 4,097 kB
Homepage: http://www.nvidia.com/
Description: XFree86 GLX libraries for the NVIDIA's X driver
* media-video/nvidia-kernel
Latest version available: 1.0.4349-r2
Latest version installed: 1.0.4349-r2
Size of downloaded files: 648 kB

Hi,
The module name has changed from NVidia to nvidia. You probably have the old name listed in /etc/modules.autoload. Change it and all should be well. No need to reboot, by the way: just rmmod the currently loaded NVidia and then insmod nvidia.o. Should have you up and running.
Cheers,

yup! that did it! thanks mike!
just out of curiousity, how does one know about module name changes like this? has it been posted somewhere where i couldn't see it? should i have read an error log that said something to the effect of "All previous usages of 'NVidia' will now be known as 'nvidia'"? |

I'm pretty sure that when I upgraded it printed a message at the end of the install. Maybe you missed it because you upgraded a bunch of packages at once? Usually major changes like that get put in a message in the ebuild. As for missing it because of batch upgrades, I think that problem has been brought up before, but I am not sure about its status at this point.
