Hi all,

i am trying to get jmicron ide controller on Asus p5b mainboard working using a gentoo-sources kernel (2.6.18-r1) to be able to use my LG DVD burner.

I read several threads/answers from KernelOfTruth in this forum regarding live CD support and support with mm-sources etc. According to this I tried mm-sources 2.6.18-mm3 which worked great with the controller but unfortunately after that neither my nvidia-drivers nor my ivtv driver (for my haupauge card pvr150) did compile. When i tried i resulted in some "ACCESS VIOLATION SUMMARY" error messages.

Now my question:
did anyone successfully tested the jmicron controller using gentoo-sources which i would prefer because the rest of my setup is well supported? Maybe i am just missing something in my .config... and the gentoo sources are already well patched. I tested all in 2.6.17 and 2.6.18 up to now

All the options like passing "irqpoll" in grub menu.lst to the kernel are working with mm kernel but not with my current gentoo-sources

Regards,

weeny

...ok did some additional test and research yesterday.

Here is an update:

According to the Change Log of kernel.org vor 2.6.18-r1 the Jmicron problem is worked around in ide-generic driver. A dedictated Driver will be included in the 2.6.19 or you can say it is and it is working now if you use the testing/rc version of the testing kernel (see threads form KernelOfTruth about live CD etc)

So i asked myself may be i still have some method in my bios because there i played around a lot when i was trying to get this working. I found that i set the mode for the controller to ide instead of ahci so i switched back to ahci and did a reboot with 2.8.18-r1 with the suggested "all-generic-ide" parameter in grub conf for the respective kernel line.

Now finally it showed up device /dev/hdci (the DVD burner attached to the Jmicron Controller...) but since for a workaround my old ide harddrive is currently connected to a "Promise Ultra133TX2 PCI-to-IDE" Adapter it could not find my harddrive so i was stucked again.

So for the moment i think i will wait until i get a gentoo-sources-2.6.19 that supports my beloved hauppauge card (with ivtv drivers) and burn CD on my girlfriends Mac OS X book if necessary :)

According to http://plabatut.free.fr/html/ga_965p_ds4.html.en#sata-ide the JMicron controller should work:

JMicron support is provided by the CONFIG_BLK_DEV_PIIX kernel option for Serial ATA and by CONFIG_IDE_GENERIC and CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDEPCI for Parallel ATA. Warning: Prior to kernel 2.6.18-rc1, the PATA ports of the JMicron chip were not properly detected. So you need to get a recent kernel to use your IDE optical drive for instance.

Haven't tried it myself though as I my Asus P5B Deluxe system won't even boot right now.

are you also using an your old ide harddrive and cdrom/dvd burner to do a fresh installation and missing a live CD with up-to.date 2.618/19 kernel that works to boot from?

I tried live several live CDs (like knoppix, kubuntu etc.) but in gentoo forum i found a thread about a gentoo live CD with 2.6.18 "mm" sources that has a new kernel that will boot from the Jmicron ide. Since my Promise IDE/PCI Adapter works now i could work around it as described above but you could try that one.
