I have kde 3.1.1a as well as kde 3.0.4 emerged, and can't seem to find what I need to do to get gentoo to run kde 3.1. I've changed the parameters in rc.conf, and despite what XSESSION is set to, kde-3.0.4 is what's started each time.

in your .xinitrc file in your home dir, you can qualify the whole path for kde 3.1 like:

.xinitrc
Code:

exec /usr/kde/3.1/bin/startkde

having that in your .xinitrc will make it start kde 3.1 instead

you could also remove kde 3.0.4 as well with emerge -C kde-3.0.4, but use the --pretend flag to make sure your getting rid of the right version :)
I seem to remeber a post detailing the removal of older versions of kde 3
this may help:

this thread also seems to be about the trouble your having

If you want it at boot simply edit rc.conf and set 'DISPLAYMANAGER="KDM"', then add xdm to the default runlevel:
Code:
# rc-update add xdm default

Thanks for the suggestions, but even when I select 3.1 (3.1.1a) with KDM, when the KDE desktop starts loading, the 3.0 display is what gets started. That display doesn't function entirely normally unless I've selected 3.0. With 3.1 selected, the 3.0 desktop comes up, but error messages (unable to create io-slave; unable to find service ...;) occur when attempting to run anything. I haven't yet tried the unmerge.

I had this exact problem as well. The unmerge will probably do the trick, but if I remember correctly, the problem had something to do with the KDEDIRS environment variable which probably exists in your /etc/profile.env and/or /etc/csh.env.

I think I just removed that variable from the relevant file in /etc/env.d and then rebuilt the two files mentioned above and the problem went away. I don't run the KDE 3.0 stuff any longer, so that may now be broken for me, but at least 3.1 works fine again.
