mouse and keyboard probs

I have finished the install of gentoo and have installed kde 3.1
The problem I am having is when I type "kdm", I get the login screen, but neither my mouse nor my keyboard will work.

So, here is what I am wondering...

I use a pci usb card for the mouse (connected via usb obviously)
and I have a keyboard (generic use wanted on it) but it connects thru an adapter (the input is larger so I have a large to small adapter for it).

What I want to know is before I drive myself even crazier with trying to get these to work, does gentoo support these devices?

I have enabled everything I could find in the makemenuconfig and recompiled several times.
Some of the things listed in configuring the devices I could not find though and it feels like I have looked thru the list about 5,000 times now.
