Hi there,

I've recently bought myself a new laptop, and after running Kubuntu on it for a few weeks, I decided to switch to Gentoo (I'm using Gentoo on my desktop since last year, and I'm still very pleased about its stability and configurability).
Besides a few driver issues there were no real problems, exept for this one little annoyance: GIF-images won't show up. Neither on-line, nor while browsing my filesystem.
The first thing that popped into my mind were the USE-flags: I had obviously forgotten to set the "gif"-flag before compiling qt. So I set the flag, re-emerged qt (and Konqueror, just to be sure), and... It still doesn't work.

After having searched these forums (and a couple of other websites) I'm really out of options, so I hope one of you can provide me with the winning formula to solve this issue.

Thanks in advance!

Try "emerge --newuse --deep world -av".

After updating to gcc 4.1.1 , modular X and KDE 3.5 also the gif's disappeared from my computer.
Setting the gif use flag and
emerge --newuse --deep world -av
brought them back and I can see this laughing smile  .
Thanks a lot!
I did not know that a gif use flag exists. A question remains why are such obvious use flags not set per default? Probably 99.9% of the users prefer it to be set.

True, but the remaining 0,1% are zealots. :)
I have the same problem, I'll try setting the gif flag too.

isn't there a way of avoiding re-emerging the whole world? I've already done that when I switched to gcc 4.1.1 (but I ignored about the gif filag)... :(
thanks in advance

I answer myself: actually reemergin (with "gif" in USE) qt and kde stuff was enought to have gifs back...

I still don't understand why is not gif in the default USE...

Actually, a lot of people might not want a gif use flag. Those that run servers without X and all, that is.

I see, but those that use an X server (e.g., X in USE)... gif might be implied by default in that case...
