Whither XMMS? [SOLVED]

I just emerge sync'ed, and now all xmms are hard masked. Is this intentional? Is there something nearly equivalent that I should be using instead because it's a lot better?

Ah, just merged again, and the latest package.mask says, 'use audacious instead'. So I'll give it a whirl.

Audacious doesn't seem to have as many plugins as xmms does. Or are all those features built in? Is there something like the xmms-status-plugin for Audacious?

No, doesn't seem so. I just test-emerged audacious, and I like it. Allthough I don't really see any big differences for my use ... just playing music. But I need an alarm plugin like xmms-alarm, and there's none for audacious. At the audacious forums a guy started a port for an alarm plugin, but his last message is from may. Additionally I have a nice working lirc setup for xmms and I'm too lazy to configure it for audacious (never change a running audio player?

). So I want to keep using xmms ...

And there's the problem: doing an emerge -Duvan world shows me quite a big list of packages that want to be recompiled because of the new use flag "-xmms". I unmasked xmms and added "xmms" to my make.conf, but portage seems to ignore that. What's the problem with xmms at all? Why is it masked? package.mask only says:

media-plugins/xmms-mpg123-1.2.10-r1 is not masked whereas xmms is

You can copy xmms ebuild to overlay and then change keywords in ebuild or unmask it in pakcage.keywords

i stopped using xmms a while ago, because amarok is just better

but anyhow, i used audacious for a while too, but xmms was just better, the interface is more like original winamp und not quite so unstable ...

any word out there why xmms should be replaced by audacious, or Diego Pettenò <flameeyes@gentoo.org> just hates xmms?

somewhere i read that there is a totaly new version of xmms in develeopment, that is more like mpd ..?

You probably need to unmask more xmms stuff, check the entry in package.mask. Or even better; unmerge xmms and use something else.

My fvwm configuration depends on xmms. After breaking my Xorg (with i910) you are now breaking my whole X configuration. Why??

A little surprising, but hey If the energy goes towards something more worthwhile I'm all for it. Maybe they even get amarok back on track, 1.4 has been a neverending bug nightmare for me.

I think broken Upstream is the main issue.

It is a xmms2 ebuild on bugzilla. https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=93583, but xmms2 is still experimental at this time.

Another possibility will be to put xmms in an overlay, but I don't know if someone (debian maybe?) made some fixes for the bugs. The future of xmms is xmms2, and xmms don't have unique feature. If you look at the alsaplayer, it have an unique feature: a very good speed control that have a very simple API (much better as the xmms-speed plugin). Debian made some bug fixes for it. The shame is at they are even not incorporated in the cvs tree of alsaplayer at sourceforge because the admin of the project just don't care of linux anymore.

EDIT: I just see at I have been approved as new admin for the alsaplayer project, so we can soon espect a new bug fixes release with the debian fixes.

particularly xmms maintainer:

I went round the loop of trying out alternative media players several times, including once in the last couple of months. I did not find anything which I preferred to XMMS for the following reasons:
- smallest code footprint (including dependency gtk1 !)
- least number of random 'alternative media lib' package dependencies
- smallest running memory footprint vs features
- least CPU usage (excluding console mpg123)
- simplicity of interface
- winamp skin support
- stability

Despite the fact that it's not being actively developed any more, it still works for me, better than any other player.
I think you will find many people of the same opinion.

When you compare some of the things living in /media-sound/ in portage, getting rid of xmms seems incredible.

Do you need a maintainer to volunteer?
