|
|
Using Gnome there is a shutdown dialog with options to restart or shutdown.
Same options on gdm with same behavior.
"shutdown -h now" on a terminal does the same.
Shutdown gets to a line that says "power off" then hangs for a few seconds.
Power then shuts off. Lights turn off and fans stop. Then a second or two later the fans and lights come on at low power (low speed on the fans and lights are dimmer than normal) but nothing else happens. The system does not boot.
Restart works as expected. Fans and lights do not go out during restart.
This is a recent install off a 2006.1 amd64 cd. Core2duo. Using vanilla-sources 2.6.19-rc2.
Asus p5w dh deluxe motherboard.
Any ideas where to look for something I've misconfigured? Kernel has acpi options built in.
Code: | #
# ACPI (Advanced Configuration and Power Interface) Support
#
CONFIG_ACPI=y
# CONFIG_ACPI_AC is not set
# CONFIG_ACPI_BATTERY is not set
CONFIG_ACPI_BUTTON=y
# CONFIG_ACPI_VIDEO is not set
# CONFIG_ACPI_HOTKEY is not set
CONFIG_ACPI_FAN=y
# CONFIG_ACPI_DOCK is not set
CONFIG_ACPI_PROCESSOR=y
CONFIG_ACPI_THERMAL=y
# CONFIG_ACPI_ASUS is not set
# CONFIG_ACPI_IBM is not set
# CONFIG_ACPI_TOSHIBA is not set
CONFIG_ACPI_BLACKLIST_YEAR=0
# CONFIG_ACPI_DEBUG is not set
CONFIG_ACPI_EC=y
CONFIG_ACPI_POWER=y
CONFIG_ACPI_SYSTEM=y
CONFIG_X86_PM_TIMER=y
# CONFIG_ACPI_CONTAINER is not set
# CONFIG_ACPI_SBS is not set

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Try setting the ac adaptor and any other options you think have the vaguest chance of being related, since if the only problem is the wierd behaviour then, also you might want to try the x86 board specific fixups for reboot, and also the asus/medion laptop extras, since while they are supposedly for laptops, you still have an asus board, and in my experience they can be do odd things sometimes. _________________ The Geek formerly known as -Freestyling-

Also, check the BIOS configuration for possibly relevant settings. |

I tried toggling a couple settings in bios.
Also tried enabling everything (almost) under acpi in the kernel.
I downloaded an update for the bios. Now I just have to figure out how to use it
If that doesn't work maybe I'll try mm-sources again. Panicked on me last time I tried, so I went vanilla. It did activate my cd/dvd, but killed nvidia-drivers, and this. I can live with vesa over nvidia for now, but this shutdown/restart thing is annoying.
I have way too many things on my "to do" list... |

Bios updated to latest stable, and now the latest beta version.
Reinstalled gentoo. Thought it best to get a handle on everything (was using a graphically installed system, and I had several other configuration related problems).
Tried gentoo-sources, mm-sources, vanilla-sources.
Tried shutdown off the live-cd.
Everything now shuts down then reboots when trying to shutdown. |

Then everything went to ****.
Machine check exceptions. Corrupted file system.
I think it is/was a combination of cooling and bios settings for my hardware.
Things appear stable now.
In any case, third install of Gentoo I went with x86. Still have shutdown issues.
Probably hardware related. Read elsewhere that the remote (which isn't hooked up) could cause the shutoff-half-boot thing. (it's waiting for a signal from the remote to turn on). Didn't see anything in bios about it, or it was turned off. I'll look into it further later.
Also looked into decompiling the acpi table (don't recall proper name right now). Found "warnings" but no "errors" on recompiling. Could still be an issue. Might try that again as well. |

Problem was hardware.
Specifically the on-off button.
I figured it out when the button broke off...
Currently using the old-fashioned hold two wires together type switch. I'll have to find something a little better. Just trying to decide which route to go.
Shutdown now works perfectly |
