I'm emerged xmms and kde's media pack. ALSA install was sucessfuly with my intel

LSPCI gave me
Code:

00:1f.5 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corporation 82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M) AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 01)

But whenever I try to queue up a mp3 file.. it won't queue. Both xmms and juk will not attempt to play the file.

ALSAmixer runs sucessfully. I'm not sure if sound works on my system, because I can't get anything to play anything

To give more info... I used this in my makefile to install the driver. I didn't use the built in kernel driver.
Code:
# These settings were set by the catalyst build script that automatically built this stage
# Please consult /etc/make.conf.example for a more detailed example

CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu"

Does other non-mp3 sound work? If not, could you cut and paste your entire alsamixer screen into [code] tags?

A bit hard to tell from the above, but make sure PCM and the masters are unmuted and have volume, and that the headphone lines are muted (use 'm' key to toggle mute).

It would probably help to enable some use flags, such as:
Code:
a52 aac aotuv cddb dts encode flac id3 mad mixer mp3 ogg oggvorbis vorbis
