Posted: Mon Oct 23, 2006 8:45 pm Post subject: Can't get ALSA to work |
|
|
Ever since I upgraded my kernel from 2.6.11 to 2.6.17 I cannot for the life of me get ALSA to work. I was using kernel modules before, and stuck with that after the upgrade, but when that didn't work, I tried building it in, and then tried not building it in, and tried alsa-drivers, but all to no avail, so now I'm back to trying with kernel modules. I have tried to follow the howto's with no luck, and I've read just about every thread on these forums that I could find that might be relevant.
XMMS will play music using the OSS plugin, but not ALSA. When I try ALSA it spits out an error of "failed to open device" or something similar. Mplayer wouldn't play audio on anything until I created a symlink for /dev/sound/dsp > /dev/dsp.
I should also mention that I DON'T have alsa-mixer emerged at this point, and re-emerged every package on my system that had "alsa" in it since the last kernel compile. Yes, /usr/src/linux points to the right kernel. The errors I've gotten were pretty much the same regardless of which configuration I was trying. Unfortunately I've tried so many different things I'm having trouble remembering what went wrong at what stages. I've done a good job of confusing myself.
Here's some info:

That's about all I can think of. Any help is much appreciated. I am fairly new to linux so it could be something quite stupid. I'm guessing from the output of lsmod that it could be something to do with the modules, but, like I said even when I wasn't using kernel-modules, but using alsa-drivers it still didn't work, and alsaconf had the same error. |

Did you disable OSS in kernel? I mean the pure OSS, not ALSA emulation of it.
Please put output of:
cat /proc/asound/alsa
cat /proc/asound/oss/sndstat
cat /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.6 |

I am not sure but output of your lsmod is not OK.
Try to look here part 12.
There are some suggestions how to fix it. |

I agree that my lsmod output isn't right, but I don't know how to fix it, and unfortunately that page didn't help. |
