|
|
I'm having problems changing theme with KDM.
I followed this KDE-look how-to for installing a new theme, but didn't notice any change. Then I was advised to installed kdmtheme, the kcontrol bit for kdm. Fantastic said I, exactly what I want. So I start it up and fair enough it sees my new theme. But all the buttons are greyed out. Of course, I think, it's root that runs kdm, so I'll need to run kcontrol as root. That didn't work, but then there's the administration button in the admin bits in kcontrol. Except they don't seem to do anything. Eventually I booted as root and started kde that way, and enabled kdm themes, and set the new one I wanted. Except it's not using it still When I check back as my user, the box 'enable kdm themes' is greyed out, but also empty. I'm going to see if it's the same again under root, but the kdmrc file says 'UseTheme=true', but it's just not using it.
I'm getting a bit fustrated, three days to install a theme isn't the best
What's going wrong and how do I fix it?
Thanks in advance,
-K
SOLUTION:
There is a global kdmrc that needs to be editted, in /usr/kde/3.5/share/config/kdm/kdmrc. There's a whole load more options there. My mistake was because I saw that root ran xdm and therefore kdm, it would be the root preferences that it spotted. Which is also why it showed up with kdmtheme, because I had probably overridden the stuff it would have looked at with the root stuff. So, tada. Thanks anyway guys

Well, the last time I emerged kdmtheme (I hope you installed it the Gentoo-way ), I only had to go on the control center, choose KDMTheme, hit the Administrator button and set what I wanted...
That worked perfectly that way... maybe you can try to rebuild kdmtheme. |

Of course I installed it the gentoo way Gentoo is the only way!
In saying that, I had to manually extract and place the theme itself.
Administrator button doesn't work - it comes up with the dialogue, and I put in the password, and kcontrol goes back to the intro screen, or in the bit itself it refreshes but still doesn't have the admin options.
KDM itself doesn't let me login as root, maybe that spills over into the kcontrol abilities?
I had to login as root itself and allow kdm themes that way. and it said ok.
I'll try rebuilding kdmtheme, but I don't know how much good it'll do. |

tried emerging kdmtheme, but it's masked....
Is there a reason it's masked? Just want to make sure before I emerge it. _________________ Boredom is a personal Defect

No problems here with it. |

Lately I came across this problem on 3 (!) machines (two of which did not experience it before). Control via ControlCenter has no infulence on KDM config. KDM can of course be edited in text mode (mentioned kdmrc file), but it might be to hacky for some.
The problem, as it seems, lies with new version of kdm (1.2.1) which has a bug there. Downgrading to 1.1.3 removed the problem and I am happy with the results. Waiting for 1.2.2 (not that impatiently, though). |
