hello,
i have a problem with kde-apps like kmail or kview. the thing is, that i cannot execute them by typing "kmail" for example, but when i cd to /usr/kde/3.5/bin i can execute them by "./kmail". so i guess the problem lies in the PATH-line in my profile.env, but there is already /usr/kde/3.5/bin.
what else could solve my problem ?

Could you post your PATH variable here? One easy way of doing this is using the command "echo $PATH" (without double quotes) on a bash session.

i noticed, this problem only exists for me as user, as root i can execute everything as it should be, maybe this gives somebody a clue |

For I can tell, the PATH you've posted is the PATH of the root user. And that does include the relevant KDE directories, thus enabling you to start KDE apps as root. Post the PATH for your normal (i.e non-root) user, as it is likely to be the one that is not properly set up.

You do the same thing you did to get the root PATH, but in a shell where you are logged as the normal user, not the root

okay, that's it, where can i modify this entry ?
btw., could there be an association to my problem with gnome only starting when i choose "failsafe" in gdm ?

i changed the $path in /etc/profile but this changed nothing, i'm helpless |

Put something like the following into your ~/.bashrc
| Code: | PATH=$PATH:~/Ruby\ stuff:/opt:/opt/mozilla/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/lib:/usr/local/lib:/opt/kde/bin:/usr/bin
export PATH |
log out and then log back in and then you should be able to launch kde programs as your regular user with no problem.

that didn't work for me either, i still guess it's got something to do with gnome, which i have to start in failsafe mode with gdm. when i try to start gnome normal it just stops loading after a few seconds. so i start in failsafe mode, and it works, but there is a warning message telling me, that startup script will not be executed and this is why i think there could be a relation between the two problems

Does the startup script have execution rights? Do you have another window manager or desktop environment you can log into to see if you can type kmail to get kmail to launch as opposed to going into the directory the kmail command is actually in?

hey, thanks for your answer, i made /etc/profile and /etc/profiles.env executable, but still gnome doesn't start in normal mode and i can't execute my kde-apps.
i started kde to test, whether it's working there and under kde it all worked well just as it should.
what other startup-scripts does gnome have ? |
