So I'm finally gettign around to installing gentoo on my old 20gb hard drive. I used to use Gentoo on the same drive but went back to WinXP soem time ago. Well I got a new hard drive for that computer and this one went in an external bay and I'd like to have a gentoo installation on it.
So the benefit of the external drive is it can move to different computers. I have an amd64 desktop and a intel laptop I'd like to use it on - so any recommendations on how should I swing the isntallation so it can handle both architectures? It's been some time so simple terms are appreciated |

Is that intel really an i386? As pointed out in the GWN support for i386 on modern Linux may be going away. As of now, support for anything less than i686 is iffy because of incompatibilities between glibc-2.4 and older processors. However, you can still get away with it if you use an older glibc. _________________ >>> Also, customizing emacs can be an exercise in black magic.

Yes, black magic doesn't use parentheses.

Wikipedia tells me my Pentium 4 mobile chip is i686. |

Well, if you use i686 as your CHOST and keep things fairly generic, the gentoo install will work on both systems. The Pentium4 won't support a 64-bit install, but the 64-bit system will support a 32-bit one.
Just grab a LiveCD and follow the handbook. _________________ >>> Also, customizing emacs can be an exercise in black magic.

Yes, black magic doesn't use parentheses.
