Whenever I try to emerge something I get
!!! Invalid PORTDIR_OVERLAY (not a dir): '/root/livecd/overlays/portage'
I installed 2006.1 networkless using the DVD...Also it has been a long time since I last used Gentoo, I can't seem to find the kernel sources i.e. /usr/src/linux does not exist...Any help how to fix that msg and get the sources so I can compile stuff?
Thanks! |

1. Edit /etc/make.conf and either comment out the PORTDIR_OVERLAY line or set it to something sensible like /usr/local/portage (which you can create if needed).
2. You need to merge a set of kernel sources: emerge gentoo-sources if you have no other preference.
But: After a proper install, you should already have kernel sources (you did compile a kernel...?), and your portage config shouldn't still be pointing to the LiveCD. This smells like you may have missed or stumbled on a step or two. _________________ Plants are pithy, brooks tend to babble--I'm content to lie between them.

thanks for the reply,
Like I said I used the live DVD and performed a networkless installation. I did not compile the kernel, and chose no USE flags...from what I recall the GTK installer used the kernel from the dvd and genkernel to set up the system...I also installed xorg, gnome GRPs. I know this is available on the wiki, but what is an overlay exactly?
oh and btw I updated my kernel to 2.6.17-r8 and I got the sources now...so all is good now.
Again thank you. |
