well, dont know if this is a AMD64 problem, but i cant recall haveing this using my X86.
a) open up a konsole in KDE
b) su to root
c) fireup "mc" (midnight commander).
b) close the konsole (F4) without quitting mc first.
result: mc still running (see ps aux) @100% CPU load
anyone able to duplicate this?
~amd64 and amd64, both show this behaviour.
IMHO this is pretty annoying and nasty. you dont realize this at first. argh!
you are just wondering why everything is getting slow, and cpu temp gets to its max |

you shouldn't kill a console that still has a program running in it, or else things like this happen. Just because you close the console doesn't guarantee that the program running in it will also go away.
