So I appologize if this is basic question, but I haven't found a really solid guide on this and I don't want to screw it up.

Anyway, my laptop hd is a bit dodgy at times, so I want to do a nightly, incremental backup over ssh with rsync.
I'd also like for it to increment in such a way that I can still restore from previous dates (subversion-esque, don't delete old versions, just add new stuff), and if possible, some-what compressed.

If any body has any advice, scripts, or guides, I'd be very grateful. Thanks.

Am i better off with tar? I just saw that rsync doesnt do compression, but it looks like for incremental backups with tar, I'd need a full backup once a week or month, and at that point, compression doesn't do me any good. Any thoughts?

Please take a look at rdiff-backup. Should be in Portage, too. :)
