I installed gentoo on my Compaq Presario M2000 laptop. In the process I was asked for the keyboard layout. I chose it to be the US layout. But guess I am wrong. When the installation finished, I'm not able to key in the user name properly. When I press character 's' I get 1, when I do 'o' , I get a comma and so on. This is frustrating. What keyboard layout am I supposed to choose? I'm not even able to switch to my CLI mode...pls help :(

First off: what keyboard layout do you have?

If you already have SSH installed and added it to the boot or default runlevel then you can log on from a different machine and fix the issue.
If you have no way at all to access your box then you'll have to use a live CD and chroot. The Gentoo installation manual already has a nice chapter on the chrooting part but if you need help with that then please let us know.

As about fixing the keyboard layout - it's defined in /etc/conf.d/keymaps and on your system it will probably contain KEYMAP="us". You can set that to the keymap of your choice, for example "de". What keymaps exist can be examined by looking at /usr/share/keymaps/i386/.

Good luck =)
