funky error after update to xorg 7.1 (fonts missing)

when I bring up a vnc 4.1.2 session, on this newly updated box, it looks fine, but certain fonts are missing.
and when I run apps, like vlc, I get errors like

Pango-Warning ***: shape engine failure, expect ugly output. the offending font is 'Bitstream Vera Sans 9.990234375'

ideas?

found this as well... when starting vnc

had to re-emerge xfs and fire it up.. seemed to do the trick.
