After upgrading to the new xorg and going through an amazing number of kernel-recompilation related complexities, I'm in the weird situation that ogg123 and mpg321 can play audio files (oggs and mp3s, duh) but audacious and mplayer can't. Audacious asks me if another program is monopolizing the sound card, if it's configured right, etc (I can manipulate volumes with alsamixer).

Ogg123 claims it's outputting sound through oss but setting oss as the output for audacious doesn't help (plus the oss is, I think, actually alsa emulation, so that doesn't make sense...). I can post me .config if it's necessary but I don't want to include a huge long file in here if it isn't. mad, mp3, alsa, oss, ogg, esd, and more are in my USE files.

I did notice that I'm getting some devfs-related messages when I start up now, which wasn't so before, but I don't know what to make of that---isn't devfs deprecated? Should I try enabling it in the kernel?

I got the same after recompiling 2.6.18-gentoo-r1, just to set the processor type --> timer frequency to 1000 HZ. That was it. Recompiling alsa-driver and audacious did not help. mpg321 plays as normal. But VLC crashes as well.

Turning on devfs fixed things. Bizarre.

emerge -eav audacious fixed both audacious and vlc. I must say that I also had to mount the directory where my audacious playlist was.
