does anyone know the root password for the live cd ? I dont remember there ever being one before but it seems towant one now. The only thing i am doing different this time then last year is the kernel option ide=nodma.

It's scrambled or there isn't one...you need to run passwd every time you boot a livecd.

If the bootup process went correct, you should have an already logged in root shell on the virtual terminals (Alt-F1, ... Alt-F6) if you are in the X desktop of the livecd you have to press Ctrl-Alt-F1 once to get to the consoles.

If you are on the command line and he asks you for the root password "to enter rescue mode" (or something like that) is the only case I can remember that happening. This means that hardware detection failed to some amount and the startup process was halted due to errors.

Adding the boot option nodma is IMHO the last outpost before kicking the boot cd into the trashcan. I had to add "noapic nolapic noacpi" to start my fairly recent laptop, but I dont know of any chipset out there that is borked enough to require nodma :roll:

hey ty fang i can install it from here jsut fine =) About nodma .. it wasnt getting past attemping to mount CD:- /dev/hdd and after lookin on the forums some people said to try it. ive only just found the descriptions of the options now =)
