I've read every thread in this forum about configuring SSMTP. Most advice is to dump it and emerge a 'real MTA'. Others say you must put a fully qualitifed recipient in the mailhub setting.
While I have set up full email server software on other networks, I don't believe I need to set up an MTA/MDA on this particular box. I don't have public domain address for this one. Root and I are pretty much the only users. I can get my office email with my mail client thru IMAP and download my HTML mail with a (fantastic) script called GotMail.
I really don't want to send my system notifications up to my ISP and then have to go retrieve them.
I just want the local notifications (i.e. cron emails) dropped into a folder and I'll use my mail client to get/filter/read/delete them.
I was encouraged by a few scattered responses that I can continue to use SSMTP for this purpose.

On a final thought, why would you need smtp (network-based protocol for sending/relayin email messages)? You may need just file-based mail programs. For example maildirs. It will write your message right into destination mail folder, where maildir-compatible mail client will read it. You don't need SMTP for local mail messaging at all. |
My thinking, it is in the default install, why not try to use it. Besides, it is simple, small, and only has a few config options. How hard could it be? aaarrrggg.
Here's what I have in the ssmtp.comf:
root=postmaster
mailhub=/var/spool/mail/
rewriteDomain=
hostname=_HOSTNAME_
The rest is commented out. The mail spool is permissioned in the MAIL group. I even tried to set MAIL: 127.0.0.1:25 in the hosts.allow.
The log typically reads:
May 1 07:00:00 [sSMTP] Unable to locate /var/spool/mail/
May 1 07:00:00 [sSMTP] Cannot open /var/spool/mail/:25
May 1 07:00:00 [CRON] (root) MAIL (mailed 2337 bytes of output but got status 0x0001 )
The last line drops mail into a dead.letter.
If this, in fact, can be done, then I know I'm missing something trivial. Can anyone lend a hand? |

I have learned that it can NOT be done.
If you want to read local mail (i.e. cron notifications, etc), you MUST install an MTA -or- continue to use sSMTP and send the mail to an existing MTA (another server on your network, your ISP, etc).
To all of you who were trying to tell me that, I humbly apologize for not listening. |
