Hi everyone!

Now that Xorg 7.1 has gone stable i was finally able to install Gentoo on my new notebook. It features a i945 chipset with the gma950 graphics chip. I couldn't help myself but to try out beryl since it is in portage now. It actually seems to work quite well, but when I watch a video in MPlayer or Kaffeine and start moving the window around the video "just stays" at the place and only the window moves. When the player is overlapped by another window, the video just turns blue. Videos also start going slow when I turn the cube and Alt-Tab Taskswitch video preview does not work either. Anyone experiencing the same issues?

Cheers,
fumoffu

yes, i did experienced same thing
another one was that watching a movie in a fullscreen mode (as well as for example running xscreensaver) resulted in periodical blinking of a monitor
the soultion for a mplayer was to change a video output to another one, try all you have to find the one that suits your needs

Well, that did not help at all, as I found out that OpenGL-Applications are just as bad as videos. And I don't have any other options in MPlayer (except for X11, but the the video won't stretch to fullscreen). Maybe I should just wait for a stable release :)

My mplayer has X11shm, Xvideo, and Xvidex as video driver options.

More than likely you were very restrictive on which options you compiled into your system. It works fine for me and I have similar Intel specs as you, but much more included options/settings for multimedia.

I have the same problem here on a 915GM graphics. Mplayer runs fine on x11shm, but OpenGL applications linke glxgear flicker, crash when moved over the cube edge and their window's contents lags behind the window borders when moving.
I also get following error when running beryl-manager, glxinfo etc.:
Code:
libGL warning: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x5b

and some weirdness at the bottom of dmesg (the rest of it seems fine):
Code:
[drm:i915_emit_box] *ERROR* Bad box 65147,258..379,514
[drm:i915_cmdbuffer] *ERROR* i915_dispatch_cmdbuffer failed
[drm:i915_emit_box] *ERROR* Bad box 65456,182..784,758
[drm:i915_cmdbuffer] *ERROR* i915_dispatch_cmdbuffer failed

Maybe some of those are relevant.

@roderick

Do your OpenGL apps work fine too? Maybe you could post your Useflags?

I'm having this problem as well. Why does this happen, I filed a bug report with xorg and they still haven't responded. The problem is with using a compositing manager such as xcompmgr or beryl. Composite and opengl don't play nice and I have similar issues.

are you guys using in-kernel i915/DRM modules or using the x11-base/x11-drm package? I have no such problems as the OP and I am using in-kernel modules.

I'm using the portage version. The kernel version did not work for me at all. I remember compiling it directly into the kernel (not as a module). As far as I can remember drm did not work at all. Maybe I'll try again this weekend.

So I am now using the kernel module and dri is working fine. Then I emerged the new version of Beryl. After that I read on Gentoo-XEffects that you have to start a new dbus-session for each user so the dbus-plugin can work correctly. So I put the script from that site into my ~/.kde/Autostart:
Code:
# test for an existing bus daemon, just to be safe
if test -z "$DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS" ; then
    # if not found, launch a new one
    eval `dbus-launch --sh-syntax --exit-with-session`
fi

It seems that OpenGL applications are working better now (at leat as long as nothing starts moving), but still no success with videos

have you tried the latest mplayer version (rc1)? its possible some X headers changed recently (or because of aiglx USE flag) and you haven't compiled mplayer after that.

I solved the problem for videos by emerging the latest vlc and setting its videodriver to x11.

you know, youre solution is my problem :P

effects are nice but fullscreen quality isnt.

is there no way to get xv output woring in beryl? or is this a intel-only-problem? i cant believe that there are not more threads about this ...

xv "works" for me with i915+beryl in that it displays videos okay, but none of the clever effects work properly - as I understand it, they never can since xv paints directly into the framebuffer.

Hello, guys.

What does it mean the xv paints directly into the framebuffer? Why with nvidia cards the mplayer works okay with beryl and the xv driver?

So the only way possible of using it is with the x11 driver? But did you notice this driver is a lot worse in terms of image quality? Also, full screen doesn't het good.

Where is the problem? With mplayer? With beryl? With the combinantion? With AIGLX??

Thanks a lot!

Funny, I'm using 945GM and the only issue I'm having is that VLC only displays a black screen when using XV output. Mplayer works just fine, VLC works in X11 mode but that isn't hardware accelerated so it's dog slow with horrible quality. I'm using the version of beryl from the xeffects overlay, but I seem to recall it also worked (mostly) when i used the regular version in portage.

Hello,

Are you using xv output in mplayer? Does it work ok?

Could you show your xorg.conf?

Thanks a lot

Okay. Thanks.

:( I don't know why, it still doesn't work in my FC6 distribution.
