Error while emerging epplet-base

I tried emerging epplet-base last night and it failed due to a compile error - it couldn't find an include file (esh.h or something like that). Has anyone else run into this problem? Is there an unidentified dependency in the portage tree, perhaps?

I'm completely new to Gentoo, and have been blown away by how easy it has been to install stuff. This was the first package that failed out of quite a few.

Emerge esound first and see if that helps.
