Hi,
i have the following problem:
from debian i chrooted a gentoo. is seems to work now.
the kernel i use (2.6.17 vanilla) has the ati rage module built in (aty128fb). X is looking for the module thus i can not start x.
I ran xconfig and it offered r128 first. X did not find that module. I checked the .config and i saw that in
Device Drivers>
Graphics support>
Support for frame buffer devices
there is the ATI Rage128 support named aty128fb when module.
So, i changed Device in xorg.conf to "aty128fb", and decided to compile a kernel with this driver as module.
I emerged X with VIDEO_CARDS="fglrx"
The card is an ATI 128 Rage MOBILE in a G4 Tibook from 2001.march.
Questions:
1. if the aty128fb is in-kernel, how can i order x to use it?
2. do i have to put it in module? _________________ Quis custodiet ipsos, custodes?

I have recompilled the kernel, aty128fb.ko as module, told him make module_install.
Now, even after restarting X it still can not find the module. _________________ Quis custodiet ipsos, custodes? |

You need VIDEO_CARDS="r128", then emerge xorg-server -Duv --newuse.
The fglrx driver is only available on x86 machines. _________________ Gentoo PPC FAQ: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gentoo-ppc-faq.xml |

I followed Your advise and now ended up with this message>
now, to reach to this poin it took some 10hours on my Tibook 2001 model at 500Mhz. If i follow the message above and put the needed java rpm to its place should i restart the whole process or can i continue from this point?
AND is it a problem to leave java out and continue emerging adding java later? (java is set in make.config)
All in one: i do not really want to start comp. again. _________________ Quis custodiet ipsos, custodes? |

Well, you've probably changed more flags than just the r128 flag, which is the explanation for the long emerge. I'd take a look at the handbook where it explains how portage works link, but no, you won't have to reinstall everything. The -Du --newuse flags simply upgraded everything that was out of date, along with anything that was compiled against different USE flags. You can also use the -p flag to see what portage would do when you ran emerge (always good to do before you do anything), or the a flag to simply ask you before doing anything. _________________ Gentoo PPC FAQ: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gentoo-ppc-faq.xml |

It seems that my humble newbie knowledge of Gentoo does not help me out. I tried to ignore these packages but these are definitely needed.
I tried to unmerge them and re-emerge, but the case is the same.
Should i emerge them without any flag or with some kind of force flag? _________________ Quis custodiet ipsos, custodes? |

Try the following (as root): Code: | rm -rf /var/tmp/portage/font-adobe-75dpi-1.0.0 |
and then try emerging again. You can use "emerge --resume" to continue a previously
interupted emerge process.
Doing "emerge --resume --skipfirst" will do the same but skip the first package in line
to be emerged. Can be useful for you if the "rm" thing doesn't work. |
