Hello.

I bought the following components to upgrade my old computer.

Motherboard: ABIT AB9 Intel 965 chipset
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E6300
RAM : TwinMos DDR2 PC5300 2x512 Mb
HDD: Western Digital WD3200K 320 Gb SATA-2
Graphics: Gainward 7300LE

Initialy I had major problems with installing Gentoo (the common Jmicron-controller problem).
Thanks to this thread (https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-494387-highlight-abit+ab9.html) I got a working live-cd that recognized my hdd , and I was able to successfully install Gentoo. The system has been running 100% stable for about 10 days ( and boy, this computer is fast! ) when the following happens:
While booting Gentoo the system gets stuck in a loop saying:
ata1.00: exception Emask 0x0 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x0 action 0x2
ata1.00: tag 0 cmd 0xc8 Emask 0x10 stat 0x51 err 0x84 (media error)

this is not the exact printout because the system never gets out of this so I haven´t been able
to copy the log messages exactly.

Windows boots and runs normally , so it is not a hardware problem.

The problem remains when I try to run diagnostics via the live-cd.

Tried noapic as boot parameter without results.

What to do?

Please help.

My kernel is 2.6.18-mm

... running WD Diagnostics from windows fails while testing "Raw Read Error Rate" with message:

"06-Quick Test on drive 1 did not complete! Status code = 07 (Failed read test element), Failure Checkpoint = 65 (Error Log Test) SMART self-test did not complete on drive 1!"

so it might be a hardware error after all. it is still very strange that windows is working normally.

I'm going to the store tomorrow to claim a new harddrive.

edit: the drive is brand new. is this a known problem with western digital harddrives? could buggy linux driver caused this problem?

I was once told that 10% of all new hard drives fail within a few months. I thought it was because the drive wasn't in a sealed, antistatic packet when I bought it, but that's what he said. He exchanged it so that was alright and the replacement drive (cross fingers) is still working 18 months later. The drive was a Maxtor.

I ran an extended test that confims this...

"Test Option: EXTENDED TEST
Model Number: WDC WD3200KS-00PFB0
Unit Serial Number: WD-WCAPD2436621
Firmware Number: 21.00M21
Capacity: 320.07 GB
SMART Status: FAIL
Test Result: FAIL
Test Error Code: 08-Too many bad sectors detected.
Test Time: 01:19:34, November 10, 2006 "

Just what I needed after spending many hours installing and configuring gentoo

you are right

the most time consuming task was to figure out how to get a live-cd to boot and then to configure the kernel.
i managed to dump config.gz so I'm planning to make a fresh install on an older drive right away :D
