Hi,
a few weeks ago I bought a brand new MacPro with Intel CPUs, thinking that it would be ne problem installing Gentoo on it. The Problem is always booting the installation cd since it stops always while trying to mount the CD (dev/hda, dev/hdb). After a while trying to mount /dev/hda and /dev/hdb it stops and say that it was not able to get in contact with the CD-Drive. |

Hi,
you could try booting the liveCD with the option all-generic-ide, ie
Code: | gentoo all-generic-ide |
Your problem sounds similar to that of conroe users, with strange SATA / IDE controllers - hopefully it'll work for you too!

Sorry its taken me so long to reply. I've been posting alot on http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?s=995a0f27d87dad6f9ec95813e1c707e5&t=234676&page=11
Basically, short answer is nobody has found out how yet. Some people theorize the x5000 chipset drivers aren't quite up to snuff with the PIONEER somehow. It was revealed that the sony drives for MacPro are actually NEC ND-4570A . I've purchased one of these to see if booting gentoo will be any more straight forward. I'll likely post the results of the test on the ubuntu forum when I do. Also, you may want to look at the forum on updates about patches for getting MacPro sound to work. Thats a recent problem that is just now getting solved. _________________ MacPro - 2 x 3ghz Xeon 5180, 160gb, Nvidia 7300, SuperDrive, Bluetooth 2.0 + edr
