Hi, All...
I'm having trouble reading Excel spreadsheets on my gentoo laptop (both gnumeric & openoffice)...

I'm just a novice when it comes to spreadsheets, and I don't understand why this is happening.
Could someone please give me some help with this?

2,17E+05 indicates 2,17*10^05
10 power 5 or something like that (I don't know how to call it exactly in English)
Maybe the column is too small or the format is wrong. But the information seems to be right.

Your cell format in Excel did not carry over to Gnumeric/OOCalc for some reason. Usually that imports fine, I'm not sure why it wouldn't. Select all the affected cells, change the format to Currency and you'll see the values you expect.
Which version of Excel? Which version of OpenOffice? What file format (file type) did you use when you saved the spreadsheet from Excel (Excel 97, etc.)?

This does correct the format... Thanks for that suggestion.

XLS was understood, I was looking for the specific version of XLS, which you can select when saving a file from Excel (via the Save as Type selection in the Save dialog.). But if this file is generated by a third-party program, the fact that you lose some cell formatting suggests the file differs slightly from the Excel 5.0 format as understood by OpenOffice and Gnumeric.
I don't use Gnumeric, sorry, maybe someone else can help you with a default format--although I don't recall a way to set one in Excel or OpenOffice, so Gnumeric would be ahead of the curve there if it has that capability.

OK, then the other approach would be to require the sender to open the file in their current 2003 version of Excel and save it to a compatible format, before sending it. 
Next question...
With which native Excel format, are the linux spreadsheet programs most happy?

I have no issues with conversion from office2003 or officexp excel.xls using openoffice 2.0
I use it daily.. |

Very good... excel 2003 *.xls works fine.
timeBandit is correct. The 3rd party software is the culprit!
