Hi All,

I just got a new SATA harddrive, and took the data off two older drives and put it on the new one. I tend to be a bit of an obsessive partitioner, dual booting Gentoo and XP and keeping my mp3s, videos, data, etc., all on their own partitions. So, I had 8 on each drive and therefore made 16 on my new SATA drive. For no particular reason I put all of my NTFS and FAT partitions first, followed by my ext3 ones. Transferring things over went just fine, but I ran into an interesting problem trying to mount my last ext3 partition (/dev/sda16) - turns out there is a limitation on Linux to 15 partitions on a single SCSI device, and hence, on my SATA drive. /dev/sda15 is it. So, before I got through all the effort of moving my partitions around to accomodate this limitation (funny enough, I can mount this paritition in Windows with Ext2 IFS), has anyone else encountered a solution to this?

Thanks,
Scott

If all the partitions are ext3 whats the point in partitioning? I could understand if they were different filesystems, specialised for the file size/access pattern, but they arent.
Maybe you could tear yourself away from this obsession and just have a "media" partition for both video and audio files, keeping you at the 15 limit. As you are sorting all your data out it might also be a good time to think a little more than windows first then linux, as the first partitions will be accessed quicker so would be best used for / and c: with all the data partitions at the end, it might speed up application loading by 0.3 seconds or so
