Hi. I'm using a vanilla 2.4.20 kernel, and I just upgraded my ram from 512 to 1024. When I boot without modifying my kernel, I get only 884mb ram, but everything works fine.

When I enable highmem in the kernel (processor type and features->(4gb) High Memory Support), I see 1009mb total, but many other things do not work. X doesn't start, but gives no error message. On vt10, I get a few messages like the following:
Code:
May 2 20:47:50 [kernel] Unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at virtual address 00000000

Also, the screen doesn't seem to "update correctly." When I type a command, I don't see the output of the command unless I switch to another virtual terminal, then back again.

I'm almost postive that the memory isn't bad; I've run memtest86 for several passes without errors.

Does anyone know what this could be?

Sorry, I don't know what the problem might be. I am using gs-sources-2.4.21_pre6 & pre7 with highmemory support @ 4 gigs. All is working fine.

Athalon XP 2000+, 1.25 gig Ram, Gigabyte GA-7VAX mainboard.

What does gs-sources do that a vanilla kernel doesn't? Do you think I should try gs-sources?

Do you use "HIGHMEM I/O support (NEW)" under processor type & features?

I just changed to the nvidia-kernel-1.0.4363 (masked), and now everything works perfectly.

Thanks for your time though.

Mostly the gs-sources watch the development sources and then keep up to date with hardware driver updates, not other functionality of the development kernel.
