I've used previous distros in which if I ever wanted to find a file, i could type "locate filename" and it would spit back every file that contained "filename". It doesnt work in gentoo. Is there something that I need to install, or is there a similar command in gentoo? |

You need to run 'updatedb' as root. |

Yes, updatedb will do the trick, assuming you have already emerged the 'slocate' package. |

I believe that slocate is emerged during initial install. |

normally, the database is updated with a cron job (daily or weekly),so you don't have to do an updatedb yourself (the update operation can take a while on bigger systems). So you might want to emerge cron as well. |

well, slocate was not emerged during (my) installing 1.1a from stage2, just the "ordinary" locate. (Just if someone else might be missing it)
btw, fcron forgets to install its documentation in /usr/share/doc/ ... but thats for another forum
