|

I've just bought a new laptop. Like many laptops, it doesn't have any parallel or serial ports, which I still need for a few things. I have a USB/serial cable that works fine. Can anyone recommend a USB/parallel adapter (multifunction, single, whatever) that works with linux? _________________ "The problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so sure of themselves while wiser people are so full of doubt."

Maybe you should think about getting a docking station for your notebook, if you only need the serial and/or parallel ports on a certain place. _________________ http://tam.belchenstuermer.de/ |

I did get the minidock from Lenovo with the laptop (I hope that works). I need the ports when traveling, though, so I'm looking for a cable-type adapter too. _________________ "The problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so sure of themselves while wiser people are so full of doubt."

I've used this adapter on windows and Mac OS X without any problems. The website advertises linux support, but I've never tried it.

Be warned though! USB->parallel is for parallel PRINTING ONLY! It doesn't map the "bit-flipping" mode that is typically used by non-printer parallel port devices. For instance, the above adapter doesn't work to run the parallel PIC programmer I built. |

Thanks joaander.
I don't need the parallel port for printing. I need it for an oscilloscope that uses the parallel port to display information the PC. But, this is a windows program which I'll be running via vmware, so I guess I don't need linux support for the parallel port, just windows. It'd be nice to have it as an option in Linux too, but I guess I really don't need it. Who uses the parallel port anymore anyway?
But I do need a true parallel port, not a printer parallel port. Any other suggestions? _________________ "The problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so sure of themselves while wiser people are so full of doubt."
