Try installing using the command-line.
Just use the old trusted handbook. |

I should have said that I'm a sort of a NEWBIE and not yet comfortable with "command line".
Thanks, though, for your input. |

AFAIK, the graphical installer simply isn't ready for prime time. |

But I just got this same error from the command line installer! Looking at other posts that mention the same error, I wonder if it has trouble figuring out how to deal with the tarball file. Background: I've now had a bunch of failed attempts to install, and I got tired of waiting to download the stage 3 tarball every time, so I tried using the local file:/// URI. The first time I just pointed to where the previous install left it (root directory of the new root drive, mounted as /mnt/gentoo) but it complained that its filename was the same as itself. I then tried renaming it, but got the same complaint. This time I tried moving it to a different directory, but I shortened the name to "savestage" with no extension. Could it be confused and not recognize it as a xxx.tar.bz2? |

We were all newbies once. But Gentoo is a hands-on distro. The manual commandline install is still the recommended way. So either decide you want to get intimate with the commandline and learn (and you'll find a lot of help with that here and on gentoo's irc channels), or decide to move on to some other distro... _________________ "Those who deny freedom to others deserve it not for themselves." - Abraham Lincoln

Consider this a wonderful opportunity to rectify that situation then
Seriously, gentoo is definitely not point-n-click. If you are not interested in learning something new, then gentoo won't work for you. _________________ Please add [solved] to the initial post's subject line if you feel your problem is resolved. Help answer the unanswered
