The problem I have is really strange. The thing is that after updating my gentoo about 3 days ago, I can't enter any web page using firefox or any other browser. Neither can I connect to any server using ssh. I thought my internet provider forgot to report to me that there would be something bad going on with the net but it fact when I switch to windows everything works fine. What's more when I switch back to gentoo ping works perfectly for any web page. There are no lost packages. So I the resolv.conf must be ok the same as kernel eth0 modules. I don't have iptables installed so it's not their fault either. Can anyone suggest a solution?

The problem is solved. Adding
Code:
4096 87380 174760
to /proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_rmem helped. I used 2.6.18-r1 kernel and now when I'b back to 2.6.16-r9 everything seems to be all right, but the net is not working as fast as it used to be, but I hope it's only my impression.

I'm curious, was it adding the lines to that config file that
fixed it or switching to the older kernel?

I'd go for downgrading the kernel. When I added the line mentioned the net started to work, but I was able to eneter only a couple of web pages when it stoped working again. After switching back to 2.6.16 everything is ok, except the fact that I can't emerge --sync any more :(
