compiled the kernel with ALSA_CARDS="intel8x0" on this machine Linux x30 2.6.17-gentoo-r8 #11 PREEMPT Tue Nov 14 00:56:21 GMT 2006 i686 Mobile Intel(R) Pentium(R) III CPU - M 1200MHz GNU/Linux

emerged alsa-tools. everything seems good except there is no sound, except sometimes a constant beep (maybe feedback from lspk and mic) when i unmute the PCM. ??

should i try a kernel without building the alsa-driver? instead the old-fashioned way with emerging alsa-driver? has anyone experienced the same with this soundchip?

ritzdank,

What do you have in /dev/snd and /dev/sound ... from your lsmod, it looks good.

Since you have a laptop, mute or turn off everything except Master and PCM using alsamixer. There are some combinations of settings that disable analogue output.

In particular anything with IEC or SPDI/F in its name must be off, since intel8x0 hardare can only run one sample rate at a time.
Some laptops have odd sharing of sound jacks too. That requires both mic and headphones be off to fet analogue sound out.

timer

ls /dev/sound

Code:
