I had the same problem. Club3d Radeon X800 AGP. I was migrating from a Ubuntu installation when I installed Gentoo, so I just copied the xorg.conf from that, which worked. Below is my xorg.conf. It is configured for the fglrx ati proprietary drivers, but it works for me if I just replace fglrx with vesa. You might have to read up on how to configure your screen too, since this is configured for my Samsung Syncmaster 913N. Also, you might not have all the fonts that are present here. Remove as necessary.
Code:
# /etc/X11/xorg.conf (xorg X Window System server configuration file)
#
# This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
# values from the debconf database.
#
# Edit this file with caution, and see the /etc/X11/xorg.conf manual page.
# (Type "man /etc/X11/xorg.conf" at the shell prompt.)
#
# This file is automatically updated on xserver-xorg package upgrades *only*
# if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xorg
# package.
#
# If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated
# again, run the following command:
#   sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

So you can try :

Code:
aticonfig --initial
to generate it

or

Code:
xorgconfig

but this last one doesn't enable you to use fglrx driver

i don't kno why but when i boot my PC the screen stay blank. via SSH i can see a process X using 100% of cpu. then i have no choice to kill -9 the process and do the /etc/init.d/xdm restart to have the X server running.

Doing a glxgear give an average of 250 fps while fglrxinfog display ATI radeon drivers

what i don't understand is the following

when i type

Hell ~ # aticonfig --initial -f --input=/etc/X11/xorg.conf
Uninitialised file found, configuring.
Using /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Saved back-up to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.fglrx-6
Hell ~ #

then the xorg.cong contains

# again, run the following commands:
#
# cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.custom
# sudo sh -c 'md5sum /etc/X11/xorg.conf >/var/lib/xfree86/xorg.conf.md5sum'
# sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

Code:
cat /var/Xorg.0.log | grep EE
?

why use such a debian config file?

I think you rather to do :
Code:
rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf*
aticonfig --initial

and then test your config file using
Code:
startx

what is very funny with what you asked to do is the following

Hell ~ # rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf*
Hell ~ # aticonfig --initial
Warning: Could not find configuration file
Please copy configuration file template to /etc/X11
Hell ~ #

Aticonfig --initial works only when you have already a xorg.conf file already set. :D

Do you have anything like folding@home that would be eating up CPU cycles?

I think (someone correct me if i'm wrong) that your card should work with the open source (radeon) drivers. Have you tried that?

All aticonfig checks is that the Device section has "Driver \"fglrx\"" in it, and that that driver is being used for the Screen you want (as far as I know). xorgconfig should generate a good xorg.conf, did you "cp /root/xorg.conf.new /etc/X11/xorg.conf"?

I'll check again, and against my own xorg.conf etc. when I get back home.

hi

nice shoot!!! i have folding@home running when as you know it is consuming available ressources only

and no i did not copy the file from the root directory because directly modified by the aticonfig in the correct directory

I would suggest running xorgconfig, which I believe gives you a CLI series of menus where you tell it all about your system, and it generates a file /root/xorg.conf.new, which you can then check over, and copy to /etc/X11/xorg.conf if it suits you. I would try that, and if it doesn't work, try using aticonfig to modify it. Make sure you cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.bak first.

Also, give the open source drivers a shot. If they work with your card, there's probably much better support for them than the proprietary drivers.

other question : My MX510 mouse doesn't have the scroll button working too. i saw some post saying to have

Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5" but i have Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5 6 7"

Also when i shutdown my pc i should go back to VGA mode i presume and you should see all process shutting down and me i have my screen black with orange light (like starting xdm)

i'm quite sure something is not correct but we are close of the solution.
Can you assist please?

2.6.18-r2 on amd64 platform forces kernel side AGP to be built in.
Does ATI driver require it off ? (I'm on nvidia, so just guessing)
