While crusing through my logs & performing some preventitive maintance and care services, I noticed that my dmesg was overrun with these error messages:
Code:

[drm:radeon_freelist_get] *ERROR* returning NULL!
[drm:radeon_freelist_get] *ERROR* returning NULL!
[drm:radeon_freelist_get] *ERROR* returning NULL!
[drm:radeon_freelist_get] *ERROR* returning NULL!
[drm:radeon_freelist_get] *ERROR* returning NULL!
[drm:radeon_freelist_get] *ERROR* returning NULL!
[drm:radeon_freelist_get] *ERROR* returning NULL!

Anyone know what could be causing this :?: I am at a complete loss.

emerge says:
Code:

Media-video/ati-drivers
Latest Version available: 2.9.8
Latest version installed: 2.5.1-r1
Size of downloaded files: 3,783 kB
Homepage:   Http://www.ati.com
Description: ATI drivers for Xfree86 that support ATI video capabilities

/var/log/XFree86.0.log says:
Code:

(II) Loading extension XFree86-DRI
(II) LoadModule: "ati"
(II) Loading /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/ati_drv.o
(II) Module ati: Vendor="The XFree86 Project"
            compiled for 4.3.0, module version = 6.4.18
            Module class: XFree86 Video Driver
ABI class: XFree86 Video Driver, version 0.6
...

(II) Loading /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/radeon_drv.o
(II) Module radeon: vendor="The XFree86 Project"
            compiled for 4.3.0, module version = 4.0.1
            Module class: XFree86 Video Driver
ABI class: XFree86 Video Driver, version 0.6

So I would say that with my switch over from Xfree86 4.2.x to 4.3.0, I have stopped using the ATI closed source drivers and started using the Open source drivers that came with XFree86-4.3.0

You should unmerge ati-drivers because version 2.5.1 doesn't work on Xfree86 4.3.0, if you want to use open-source drivers then "emerge xfree-drm" but if you want to test out the unstable but fast (imho) ati closed source (beta ?) drivers then "ACCEPT_KEYWORDS=~x86 emerge ati-drivers" (I wouldn't reccomend the closed source drivers because most 3D stuff doesn't work long with those drivers)

edit: and don't worget to "opengl-update xfree" or "opengl-update ati", depending on which drivers you chose
