getting the bios, than a clicking sound and the gentoo boot splash.

same thing when trying to boot from the live cd...

That's mildly surprising. But, a good first check will be to go into the BIOS and run whatever disk checking/recognition options it has.
Next step is to open the case and verify with your ear that the clicking is coming from the hard drive and nowhere else. If it's the hard drive, then my money is on it unfortunately being dead - mechanical failure. |

just took the hd's out - still the clicking. out of ideas - brought to a repair shop....

Hey there,
Bad news, I had a clicking hard drive that was indeed broken and not repairable. Hopefully, you'll be able to get some data extracted from the drive.
