I had an earlier version of mplayer which was working fine. But then I emerged this mplayer-1.0-rc and now the mplayer does not open through the start menu (or whatever you call it). It opens only through the console. Any suggestions?

Have you built mplayer with X and gtk useflags?

gmplayer starts from a command prompt without an issue? What does your menu editor say for mplayer? what about your konqueror file types, what does it have for avi? Just a couple of things to look at I guess.

Really I think that gmplayer is what is typically setup under the kde menus, though I could be wrong.. This will allow you a gui frontend.

Click the K button, under settings, Menu editor.

In konqueror, click on configure konqueror, then click on the file types icon, type in avi or so, and see what programs are being used to open certain files types. Look around in there.

well, in the konqueror, the default is set to mplayer only. so it does not open the files when I directly click on it. So, I either have to right click and select open with...... option or I can go to the settings and set the default to xine (the other player that I have).
Also, there is no information about the Kmenu anywhere

If you build mplayer with gui you will have gmplayer.. Try that at a command prompt.

I believe that if you built it with gtk, that gmplayer was compiled, just try to run that from a command line.
