Sometimes when my comp is under heavy load the system freezes for anything between 1 sec and 5 minutes, but if I just leave it, it will usually sort itself out after awhile.
Also check out another post I've made about almost the same problem: https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-517393.html

Here is some dmesg output from my most recent freece (happened during an emerge and heavy disk activity):

Any ideas?

I'm no pro with kernel debugging, but my first instinct would be with a problem with the kernel writing to swap when necessary.

Quote:

Free swap = 1761972kB

These lines show that it was attempting to move some RAM data to the swap space, yet no swap is in use, leaving me to believe there's an issue with the swap. I would reformat the swap partition, and try again. If it still repeats, try swap on a different disk. If that still fails...well, I don't know.

The reason isn't that there's a problem with the swap, the problem is that all disk access(and because of that, also access to the swap) is cut of. The real problem is that the disks just freezes under heavy load, making the rest of the system also freeze. (Check the post I linked)
