|
|
[this thread may very well be in the wrong forum, but it's hardware-related so I thought I'd start here]
Hmmm....what's that noise?? It sounds kinda like the 'ping!' of heads on platters.
So, it appears that the HD in my laptop is getting ready to bite the dust, and I'm looking for recommendations on a replacement.
Necessary specs:
ø At least 40GB
ø 2.5" IDE
ø 9.5mm thickness
ø UDMA (like it really needs saying...)
I'd really like it to have the lowest data access times possible. I understand that >RPM â faster data access, so if you know a 5400rpm drive that really rocks I'd like to hear about it.
Thanks! _________________

I must admit I've never had trouble with Seagate...perhaps I'll look into their offerings.

Many OEMs seem to use Hitachi, and they seem pretty reliable. In fact, I think it's a Hitachi that I'm replacing.
I think I'll try the Seagate, though.
Thanks for your input, it is appreciated. _________________

Silence is golden: http://www.silentpcreview.com/article29-page1.html . And, they've been testing/recommending 2.5" drives for years now.
Couple months ago, I put a Samsung SpinPoint 80G into an old Dell Inspiron; been very reliable and totally inaudible... Puts the Fujitsu in my new laptop to shame, unfortunately.

WOw. Thanks, that's a really informative site. Upon further consideration I think I'll go with the Hitachi TravelStar 5K160:
Code: | Avg Lat: 5.5ms
Avg Seek: 11ms
Capacity: HTS541616J9AT00 160
HTS541612J9AT00 120
HTS541680J9AT00 80
HTS541660J9AT00 60
HTS541640J9AT00 40
RPM: 5400
Cache: 8MB
Media Xfr Rate: 540Mb/s
UDMA-5 |
It's not the fastest drive in the Westâ¢, but it's a decent compromise between performance, capacity, power use and durability. _________________
