Problems with XFree 4.3, winex, fonts

What I've tried so far:

1. Downgrade to glibc 2.3.1-r3
2. Fire up xfontsel and manually flip through each font family
3. When you hit a font that is bad, xfontsel will crash
4. Delete that font and run "ttmkfdir" and "mkfontdir" in the directory it was in
5. When you can flip through all the available font families in xfontsel without a crash wine will work again.

Found that somewhere. When I try:
winex -winver win98 -- hl.exe -game tfc -console -numericping -noipx -nojoy
I get:
Building font metrics. This may take some time...
X Error of failed request: BadValue (integer parameter out of range for operation)
Major opcode of failed request: 45 (X_OpenFont)
Value in failed request: 0x2200d55
Serial number of failed request: 10396
Current serial number in output stream: 10397

I want my TFC. Cany anyone help?

I did phase 3, but I also re-emerged fontconfig (I'm not sure if fc-cache is enough). Make sure that you remove all webdings (and other bad font) entries from /etc/fonts/fonts.conf and $HOME/.fonts.cache-1. After that restart X and it SHOULD work.
