What is the size in MB of a Gentoo system plus KDE and Openoffice?
And what´s the size of Gentoo + Gnome + Openoffice?
I am going to install Gentoo on a 4 GB USB memory stick so I need to know. |

I can't tell you the exact size, since my system has a bunch of other crap on it.
But I will say that when you compile your system, you need to tell it to use a different drive for portage's temp space. Compiling OpenOffice takes gigabytes. There's a lot of other packages that take a lot of temp space to compile, also.
It should fit fine. I think using some dir on your hard drive as portage's temp space will save you potential headaches, and at the very least a lot of compile time. |

anyway, putting swap or an overused tmp (like for compilation) on a flash device is a sure way to kill it within hours. solid state devices have a high, but nonetheless limited number of write operations possible before they die.
anyway you might be interested in these two links:

they fit on the livecd, so... and you can also take a peek at both ubuntu and kubuntu livecds _________________ Moved to using Arch Linux

Ok, but I am running Win XP with ntfs (can´t partitionate) on my harddrive. Is there any other solution? |

basically:
1. create a big empty file on the ntfs file system (dd exists for windows)
2. build kernel with r/w support. this support is currently limited to writing to files without modifying their length, but as we already created the file, and its size will be fixed, heh
3. mount the ntfs dir, then mke2fs or mkswap the file
4. mount the files via loop _________________ Moved to using Arch Linux

how would you boot such a thing. It makes sence and shoudl work, but would you use grub or what? _________________ “Music is a moral law. ntfsresize, which is included in many livecds, will resize an ntfs partition and give you more free space for partitioning.
And if you don't want to do that route you can also purchase partition magic which runs in windows and can do the same thing.
On the other hand, the ntfsresize route is free and apparently works very well.

the goal is not to boot it, the usb key will be booted and mount that as a /tmp, swap, or even / (with a initrd) _________________ Moved to using Arch Linux
